WORK IN PROGRESS
24 May-8th June 2019
The artists and designers shown here are connected by both their shared pedagogical occupation and by living in the city of Beijing. In many of the works the influence of the latter is clear: although the works here range across fine art to design and fashion, almost all have found some inspiration from the cultural or literal landscape of the city.
The duilian by Meat Studio clearly reference a specifically Chinese tradition, whereas Richard Beard’s paintings record the built environment around the second ring road. Charlie Dutton’s paintings use cyanotype, a process using sunlight, meaning the works themselves have a specific relationship to the time and place they were exposed. Celyn Bricker’s works, made using copper, have a ‘guilloche’ pattern taken from currency printed on the surface; the guilloche is a kind of decoration that while used on banknotes also recalls the traditional pattern making of a mandala. Hannah Carter uses the written word to create abstracted patterns, that are initially chaotic before resolving into a kind of order. Jo Kedian’s work uses screenprinting to juxtapose found imagery with her own photographic work. The fashion collections of Janine Grosch and Kevin Tallon can also trace something of their influence to the contemporary urban culture of Beijing.
